Stornoway-based three-piece Peat & Diesel first made a name for themselves posting their tongue-in-cheek folk-punk across social media before the release of their 2019 debut album, Uptown Fank.
Formed by friends Callum “Boydie” MacLeod (vocals/guitar), Innes Scott (accordion), and Uilleam “Uilly” Macleod (drums), the trio started out playing songs to entertain themselves. Their mix of folk, punk, and rock — with Boydie’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics about island life — soon found an audience when videos of them performing were posted online. After a handful of gigs, and the song and video “Western Isles” going viral, their reach soon spread throughout Scotland. 2019 saw them release their debut album, Uptown Fank and they earned the “Live Act of the Year ” award at the Scots Trad Music Awards. They next released “Fairytale of Stornaway,” their take on the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s Christmas standard “Fairytale of New York.” Peat & Diesel delivered their sophomore album at the beginning of 2020. Light My Byre entered the U.K. Top 30 upon its release and the trio went on their sold-out “That’s the Way We Do It” tour in support of the release. ~ Rich Wilson, Rovi
