Meet ‘Em – Heartworms

Military imagery, gothic aesthetic and synth laden post-punk tunes. Heartworms joins us on the 13th July, so we got to know ’em…

Hey Jojo – how are you feeling ahead of your run of summer shows?

I’m nervous now, I always am when it comes to upcoming shows. Until I’m on that stage just about to play I’ll be feeling excited and ready.

There’s a good mix of festival dates and venue based shows, do you look forward to hitting some of the outdoor stages and how do you feel it compares to the more intimate venue gigs?

Outdoor stages have more air, I like the sound that travels and bounces off the crowds of chatting people and other stages that are around, there’s less pressure in my head. I don’t enjoy the chaos of festivals though, I’m quite particular with things running on time and most of the time it’s absolute madness. I love intimate shows, because I like to get up close and personal with the crowd that are there to see me, I bounce off the people better. It’s always fun to have the mix of the two though.

You’ve always cited military imagery as a big inspiration, does that controlled aesthetic cross over into your song writing? Is there a routine for how you go about creating or does it fluctuate?

I’m specific and regimented in terms of the spaces that I write in. That being my office, which I call ‘’The Bunker’ but not in terms of a schedule. I’m not the sort of artist that writes everyday, ideas come to me and can take months to make into a demo.

We’re loving your latest single ‘Jacked’, has that been in the works for some time?

Thank you, I’ve been playing it live for two years. Recording it had taken it up a notch working with Dan.

Can we expect to hear any more new material during your set?

If you’re lucky.

Whilst touring who do you think your most listened to artist is whilst travelling from show to show?

Depends where I am in my head, sometimes I’m just wearing headphones without music and sometimes I’m listening to artists I love, for example Prince.

Finally, mosh pit or dance floor?

Definitely dance floor, but if it’s my own mosh pit maybe I’d jump in?

Heartworms joins The Bodega on the 13th July. Tickets on sale now.
