Country quartet First Time Flyers are gracing our stage on the 22nd (with support from Jonny Morgan) so we thought we’d get to know ’em.
Hey First Time Flyers! For a band that are around two years old, may I first say that your list of achievements is very impressive? Yes you may. Thank you for saying that.
You’re coming to headline The Bodega later this month. I believe you’ve been here once before supporting Jamie Lawson. How was that?
Oh every show with Jamie was a beautiful experience for many reasons. Firstly because Jamie is truly a wonderful kind, unique and authentic artist, so spending time with him and meeting his fans, who were so willing to welcome a country band, was a special experience. The Bodega is a show we remember well, and definitely had a strong urge to return, so we are counting down the days til February 22nd when we return.
There is a lot of press coverage at the moment about a country music revival, with Beyonce winning a Grammy for Best Country Album and artists such as Zach Bryan and Luke Combs becoming household names. Is now a good time to be in a country band?
There has and it is truly a positive thing. The artists who have shone a light on country music recently, the ones mentioned above, and the likes of Post Malone, Ella Henderson & even Sabrina Carpenter peppering her album with some subtle country references, has given every country artist a little more voice in the industry. We’ve always enjoyed making country music, but yes, now feels like a special time to be part of the movement and see how much the world are welcoming it.
We have to talk about The Boss! You supported THE Bruce Springsteen at Hyde Park in 2023. That must have been immense! Did you manage to catch up with the big man? Maybe a run-in with Sil from The Sopranos?
What a day the was! We headlined the birdcage stage and right before we went on Bruce was backstage with Bon Jovi being a man of the people, jamming and chatting away… WHILST we were on stage! But hey, all part of the job! We were lucky to chat to some other artists, Frank Turner and Natalie from The Chicks.
Speaking of icons, who are the ones that do it for you guys? Let’s say the best musical artist of all time!
There are so many to chose from these days, but as a band we take huge inspiration from the likes of Lady A, Fleetwood Mac.. we love classic country from Dolly, Alison Krauss, The Chicks… & even the leaders of country music today, Brothers Osborne, Lainey Wilson, Kacey Musgraves & the epic Chris Stapleton of course…
You’ve released ten singles so far. Can you tease us about anything with a tracklist coming anytime soon?
10?! wow… after 3.. we stopped counting! Haha, but truly, we have been so lucky to have such great support from the fans on all those tracks so far… we are truly spoiled for choice as we cannot stop writing… we almost have too many songs… but yes, with the sheer amount of songs we have, we are bound to break out an album at some point!
Imagine money is no limitation. What’s on your dream backstage rider?
This is a fun question!
Juicer and a coffee machine… scrap that, we want a barista back stage! Honestly… it would probably be some kind of portable recording system so we can record as we go… and a masseuse?
In terms of food.. Tim wants an all meat Carvery.. Vicki opted for a pick n’ mix wall.. Jake will steal all the hairbo strawbs and Pops would like a wood fire pizza oven to make some pre… & post sourdough pizza…
Also lets throw some pastries in there..
