The Virgins Break Up, Cancel European Tour

Comment from lead singer Donald Cumming:

“There’s nothing I’d hoped to do with The Virgins that we haven’t done. It’s been an incredible experience and I want to thank everyone who was a part of it, but now it’s time to move on. I’ll see you in my dreams.” – Donald

The Virgins planned 2014 Europe tour is cancelled. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.

The Virgins released their sophomore album Strike Gently in March 2013. Over the last several months they have been supporting it with tours across the U.S. and internationally. The band recently played their biggest shows to date while supporting The Killers on their last two American tours. The support slot culminated in what would be The Virgins last hometown performance, a sold out show at Madison Square Garden. In August the band performed for the second time on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Strike Gently was first release on the new label, Cult Records. Cult Records founder Julian Casablancas notes, “When I first saw the Virgins I was psyched there was such a rad new band from NYC. Donald’s such an awesome guy and it’s great to meet someone who’s such a true artist. I think they’ve made a classic record and we’re really excited they chose to work with us.”

“[The Virgins are] making reliably honest, memorable music…their next album is definitely something to look forward to.”  • Rolling Stone

The Virgins was started by singer Donald Cumming in 2007 and are from Downtown New York City. The band features Max Kamins (bass), Xan Aird (guitar) and John Eatherly (drums). They have shared stages with Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith and recently supported The Killers on their U.S. arena tour culminating in a sold-out hometown performance at Madison Square Garden.

The Virgins long-awaited second album Strike Gently was released in March 2013 as the first release on Cult Records, a new label founded by Julian Casablancas. The album received widespread critical acclaim with The New York Times praises, “the new material is more organic, a harmonic, stripped-down rumble of moon-light swagger and blue-rose tattoos,” while NME asserts, “…a surprisingly dynamic listen, shifting from scuzzy, hungover romps to soft, romantic croons and smooth, sexy hits.”

RollingStone.com describes the lead single “Flashbacks, Memories, and Dreams” as, “…an edgy dance-punk number with a supple funk bass groove, street-noir vibe and skittish guitar licks.”
