KASSASSIN STREET

Kassassin Street are a rare proposition in the current time when soundcloud streams dictate the perception of a band’s success: They are a band who sell out their shows, their fans knowing that when they go to a Kassassin Street gig they’ll be transported for an hour of twisted, dance infused psychadelia. In their hometown of Portsmouth, they sold out the Wedgewood Rooms last year and again in April 2015. They hold the record for the fastest sell-out at the Cellars in Eastney, and also sold out The Joiners in Southampton and St Pauls in Worthing this year – their first sell outs away from home.

Their first song posted online was titled ‘The Royal Handkerchief Ballet’, in May 2014. Jumped on by the NME (Radar write up) and local blog Breaking More Waves (“this five-piece have an exhilarating vibrancy and energy to their sound”); support soon followed from BBC Introducing, Tom Robinson on 6Music, and Eddie Temple Morris on Xfm. A busy summer followed, seeing the band travel out to Isle Of Wight Festival, Truck, and Bestival, where they gave ‘one of the standout performances of the weekend’ (eFestivals). Their festival season finished with triumphant homecoming slots at Victorious Festival and Southsea Fest, the latter being described as “a truly spectacular performance” (Vulture Hound).

Second song post, ‘Centre Straight Atom’, was a statement of intent from the band. Breaking More Waves said it best, writing “A pulverizing stadium shaking beast of driving dirty electronics and space rock guitars, it manages to grab you by the privates as both a club stomper and indie anthem.” The Metaphorical Boat wrote that “Kassassin Street set the bar quite high with ‘The Royal Handkerchief Ballet’, so it’s great that the band have managed to well and truly smash that benchmark [with Centre Straight Atom].”

The band’s third song was posted in April this year – set opener To Be Young. Recorded with Tristan Ivemy (Frank Turner) and mixed by Dan Grech (Circa Waves, The Vaccines, The Kooks, Keane), it roars in to life from the start and ‘goes at it like two lustful lovers who haven’t seen each other for months and doesn’t let up until it has climaxed after a glorious three minutes and forty seconds.’ (Breaking More Waves). A short run of shows in April followed: Brighton, Guildford, London, and another sold out show at the Wedgwood Rooms. Summer 2015 will see the band unveil tracks from their debut EP and play a handful of festivals.
