MY BABY

…was born in the small hours of a red moonlit night in Amsterdam in 2012. Brother and sister Joost and Cato van Dijck fused their futures and blended their souls with accomplished slide and blues guitar player Daniel de Vries to invent the spells and potions that make up the songs played by My Baby.
In 2013 they released their debut album “Loves Voodoo !” and started to spread their magical hypnotic voodoo blues beats in many countries – building a loyal and growing following with their entrancing and compelling live show.

Of the first album “Loves Voodoo !” released in 2013 they say: “( It was) a protest album with socially conscious lyrics. There was a lot a venting of frustration concerning society.“ In summer 2015 they are touring Europe to promote their second album “Shamanaid” released in May and currently being licensed across Europe. In strong demand at Festivals especially in native Holland, and playing at no less than seven alternative stages at Glastonbury 2015 and poised at break out stage. They were chosen by Seasick Steve as the opening act on his April UK tour and made a lot of friends.

In their own words : On the album Shamanaid “ Shamanaid is in our imagination a drink or magic potion used in a shamanistic ritual. Music is also an important part of those rituals. Repetitive beats and melodies are used to get into a trance, we always try to achieve something akin to that with our music.” It’s rather fitting, given the band’s deliciously toxic blend of fingerpickin’ guitars, roots, funk, gospel and Southern swampy blues. Joost adds. “It’s a brew loaded with the music styles we love,” he says. “We borrow from the rich history of folk music from all around the world and bring it to the moment of now.”

Describe your sound : “ a sound inspired by old blues and folk music, but played with the rawness of sixties/seventies soul and funk. It’s got an edgy trance like infusion of electronic dance without having to use samples and loops”

If you could collaborate with anyone alive, or dead, who would it be? “ There would be a whole list! Sly Stone, Seasick Steve, Jimi Hendrix, Jack White… I could go on. But perhaps the best thing would be to be transported back to 1936 and jam with Robert Johnson when he cut his first tracks in a make shift studio in the Gunter hotel in San Antonio.”

Review from the Great Escape, Brighton Over at the Spigeltent there was a buzz brewing about Dutch tribal-blues-psychedelic-funk trio My Baby. High energy and having earned a support on Seasick Steve’s recent tour, they feature the captivating Cato van Dyjck on vocals and guitar, playing in an inimitable fashion, whilst belting out some soulful, dance-inspired vocals, all the while dressed for some serious party action, large crucifix ‘n all. Along with drumming brother and drummer Joost and second guitarist ‘Da Freeze’ Johnstone, they converted the audience by the end of their show through their skilful, primal, and exuberant rhythms. One to watch.

And from the Brighton Argus : It’s a pleasant surprise to come across a band who defy all attempts to be classified. Walking into the Spiegeltent with no expectations – and if anything an initial reluctance to stay on finding what looked like a rock band from the 1970s preparing to launch into their performance – it was an unexpected pleasure to discover this Dutch three-piece band. Lead singer and guitarist Cato van Dyjck somehow brought to mind rock goddess Stevie Nicks, and as the intensity of the tracks increased there was a palpable moment of recognition that something special was unfolding.

As Cato’s vocals soared, so did the audience, buoyed by the incredible chemistry of these three musicans, who effortlessly combined a rock sensibility with elements of soul, roots blues and trance.

With Jost van Dyjck (Cato’s brother) on drums and talented guitarist Daniel De Vries, the trio created a startlingly idiosyncratic sound. Cato’s vocals may have an ethereal quality but they managed to pack a huge punch, with her judicious use of a delay pedal adding further layers to the sound.

It’s rare for a band playing live to create the kind of vibe normally reserved for top name dance DJs but My Baby nailed it. In fact they nearly blew the roof off the Spiegeltent. Recommended. Four stars

Review – After Nyne : “ the band have concocted a sexy, sinfully enjoyable sound.”

Single “Seeing Red” is released on 17th July
